The Blogger platform. Once again adding to the experience of blogging...
This post is a query for my fellow bloggists, some of whom may recall a glitch that happened awhile back when thumbnails were not showing in the updated blog lists. It seems that this is going on once again. I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed?
...and before anyone suggests checking the settings in my Blog Widget, you will note in the above that I have enabled thumbnails (and I have saved this multiple times over--all to no effect).
As the above screen shot from the excellent Battle Game of the Month Blog shows, thumbnails for my blog (and others) are not showing on other blogs. I should add that I have been following the superb code fix that Jonathan posted on his Palouse Wargaming Blog to address the earlier thumbnail issue, which seemed to be working (up until now). Looking at the above, another curious thing is that there are a few blogs that still have thumbnails in the update (Keith's Wargaming Blog in the above)--what the difference is, I cannot tell: I'm stumped.
Hi Ed, this "feature" has been present in the blogger Blogs Followed gadget for at least a couple of months. When this first surfaced, I experienced the five stages of grief. I am better now that I have accepted it.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, when this happened, I did as you and investigated and tested. Notice that thumbnail sketches still appear as expected in the Reading List . Sadly, I cannot offer a tested remedy but I think I can pinpoint what is going on and why. I do have a suggested remedy but have been too timid to try it myself.
What is going on is much too long to put into a comment but my hunch is that it boils down to a bug in the gadget, Google's path for photo storage, and a recent Blogger switch from unnamed to named photos.
I am not sure if my exploratories warrant a separate blog post with my discoveries, hunches, and possible fixes or not...
I have been noticing this for awhile, and have sort of adjusted to the new reality--inconsistent as it is (thumbnails in some spots and not in others). Thanks for the assessment. The last fix was at the limits of my skill set. This one probably isn't worth trying to work around. Maybe they'll pop back at some point in the future.
DeleteHi Ed - I have noticed - happened 4-6 weeks ago I would estimate. I have not bothered asking about it because, although I have no doubt lots of people know how to fix it, I probably would not understand the answer! I just wish technology would work as expected and be left alone. Outlook is the same - the search function on the latest version is shite, compared with all previous ones - everyone I complain about it to agrees!
ReplyDeleteThis us the problem with "subscribed" tech that we use but someone else controls. They employ staff who validate their existence by screwing around with it, and the model is to keep changing things for no reason other than to "update" it. I don't mind when there is a real fix or some actual utility involved, but it seems to often be the case that these are cosmetic and/ or arbitrary changes that do littke more than make you relearn the interface. And as often as not, as we seem to experience in Blogger, they foul something up.
DeleteSeems to me that my print books have a pretty good interface that has remained stable for a few years. Too bad that isn't seen as a lesson by the CIOs and Bill Gates wannabes of the world.
I just roll with it. Sometimes they show, sometimes they don’t. I think it has something to do with the type of image. Dunno.
ReplyDeleteI shrugged when I first noticed it as well. The reason I posted was because the last time around there was quite a bit of buzz about the thumbnails not showing. I think we've been conditioned to just deal with things like this by now--and given other things pressing for our time and energy this one doesn't rise to the give a darn level (not enough to figure out a workaround beyond making sure the settings are right).
DeleteUmmmh, IF I noticed at some point, I've forgotten and had forgotten that they were ever there. A bit of experimentally tinkering didn't change anything, BUT I do notice that one blog on my list is showing a thumbnail so maybe its a setting on the blog being listed that makes the difference? (and no I haven't even tried to figure that out).
ReplyDeleteIt is curious that some thumbnails post. I have no answer, either.
DeleteIts Blogger Ed…sigh!…
ReplyDeleteI’m sure they are doing something that will make it wonderful for all of us…. Maybe 😁
All the best. Aly
That's the spirit! I guess the price is right, so there's that.
DeleteIt's very confusing, I've had to change how I comment or continue as anonymous amongst other things, but at this price I'll grin and bear it!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Hi Iain. A few months ago, I noticed that comments to my blog were being moderated (ie, started being dumped where I needed to approve them)--this despite the fact that I did not (nor still don't) have moderation enabled (for those left on posts less than 30 days old). So I diddled with the settings to allow anonomous posts, which helped, but it still sends some people to moderation (for some reason). The other side of your point about something happening to commenting. But, as you say, the price is right.
DeleteI read all my blogs on Feedly and have noticed over the last few months that many images in Blogger posts there no longer show either, so it's almost certainly a Blogger "feature".. and I suspect Jonathan is bang on with his comment about some property in the Blogger image... the one's that show are probably non Blogger images, ie they've been inserted from some other tool... it is weird though, as on Feedly some blogs you see some pictures and not others!!
ReplyDeleteIt is a mystery. Reminds me of something that, were I still working, we would get tangled up with the IT people about for months trying to figure out (and in the end, the "solution" would be more painful than the problem). Happily, that isn't needed here--thumbnails are nice, but hardly central.
