BACK TO SQUARE ONE--MINUS A FEW

The cleared out (almost) Games Room...

Well, for those who may still be checking in around here, I thought I'd do an update on what has been going on here in Meanderer Central--by way of what has not been going on as far as blogging (and gaming).  In my last post, I concluded with a note about "real life" intruding on hobby life. That has continued (and intensified).  It all began with the skylights in the Game Room (above), which are original to the house. In other words, about 30 years old and now allowing water seepage. Thus, they will need to be replaced (and the water seepage damage repaired, repainted, etc).
This was/is a particularly discouraging development in the light of the major effort that I had just gone through to reorganize the space and set it right (above), the process for which I reported on in this blog (and earlier reported on the major cull that preceded it). All of this, of course, meant that I would need to clear out the contents, eventually. Given that we have reached an agreement with a contractor to do the work but have not yet been scheduled for the job, this was something that could be put off for a bit (or so I thought).  Meanwhile, running in the background, Mrs Meanderer and I have been in the market for places we might move to, and at this time, we saw a house that ticked all the boxes--and put in an offer. Consulting with our realtor, we also decided that we should put our current house on the market. Suddenly I was under the gun to clear out the game room as part of prepping to show the house (and hopefully an accelerated date for repairs) on top of everything else that was happening (prepping the rest of the house, dealing with the myriad of things involved with the new house)...arrrrrrgh!

So in short order, I wound up repacking my hobby stuff and schlepping boxes,  boxes, and more boxes up into the attic. Above is a shot of a portion of the haul.  We are fortunate to have a house with a swing space like this to store stuff.,,but still. There was no joy here.  As I was going through this process, I was struck by the obscene amount of space my hobby stuff takes up, and all of this after I thought I had cleared out and streamlined my collection.  Looking at the opening picture, you will note the still full shelves against the back wall that have yet to be shifted. After going through this, I'm not sure that all of the stuff that went into the attic will be coming back...
...in particular, when I cleared out what (I thought) was a modest two-shelf remainder of my culled book collection and found that it still amounted to 9 boxes of books, plus two plastic bins, I was about ready to walk them to the nearest dumpster rather than to the attic.  But I decided to store them for now and take another hard look when I pull them out.  Meanwhile, we were doing similar work in the rest of the house, not just in my game space. But the effort involved with shifting my hobby stuff dwarfed any other chore.  Like many, though, I guess I've reached that point in life where we reassess our hobby pile. For now, it's all safe and sound. I know that I'll need to find a more settled time to do a sort rather than do a hasty purge under duress. In short, a very busy time (to say the least)....
...but then, the inspection for the place we were going to buy came around and we found some things that made us decide not to close. So we weren't moving after all. Fortunately, we had not yet listed our current residence, and so put a halt to that process as well.  In short, we're back where we started.  While all this was going on, we had family visiting from out of state, a major heatwave, and a bout of near flooding rains (although we were fortunate in these parts to just be very, very wet and not suffer any actual damage).  Despite the halt on the move, we have taken this opportunity to continue to clear out the house, declutter, and make it easier for us to move when that time comes.  In addition, this has meant a parade of DYI projects for me--all those little things that you live with but need to set right in order to show a house.  Regardless, I will need to keep my game room empty in anticipation of the repairs that will happen there (eventually)--and most likely I will probably just keep my stuff boxed up rather than putting it back again. So I probably won't be running any games for some time.
So, like Jonah, I have been swallowed by events. Once the "real world" spits me out, I hope to be able to return to the far better world of blogging and toy soldiering.
Just so that this isn't too dreary and a complete waste of time, toy soldier wise, here is a cache of images from my  Joust for the Fun of It  Big  Knight Collection. I have put together six teams, each with unifying theme...
Each team consists of four knights, two "ordinaries,"  one "notable," and one "lord." For most of the ordinaries, I used the same figs (above), painted and modified for each team.
As a play aid, I made these markers for each team. They are 1.5 inch x 1 inch wood wargame stands, stained, with each having the shield design of the knight. They track which knight has been used (flipped over) and which has yet to joust.  Each team has a color and/or theme (as usual, you may clix pix for big pix)...
Team White

Team Black
Team Red
Team Blue and Yellow
Team Green
Team Paladin (Crusader Themed): nicknamed "Salt and Pepper" for the black and white.

That's it for now. Looking forward to resuming normal levels of surfing, blogging, and commenting in the future. Thanks for stopping by.

Excelsior!

  1. Real life can be a bit of a nuisance, for sure Ed! That is a rather sorry tale but I guess at least you did not buy the new house and THEN find the issues that put a stop to the sale process. Most of have events of this type in our future I imagine, as tempus fugits and we move towards family less houses that we need to downsize from.....not something I am looking forward to, to be honest, but it will come one day I assume.
Do keep reading and commenting on blogs, even if you feel you do not have anything much to post on your own for a while, its good to have regular contact with the same group of internet friends, as Stew points out now and again!

    1. Although the process was less than ideal (to say the least), the outcome was positive in that we did, indeed, dodge a bullet on issues that we would have inherited (which at the price point, would have been no deal). Agree on keeping in touch with "the circle" of usual suspects; I have missed that. Although things are still moving along, I intend to make time to make the rounds again.

  2. Gosh, you have been toing and froing of late! We are pretty happy where we are and have no plans to move, short of a Lottery win. Even so I too have been looking at my lead pile, wondering in reality how much will I ever want to use, talk less of even getting around to basing and painting. Turning 60 later in the year you do begin to really re-assess your gaming priorities and others too.

    1. The funny (in an odd sort of way) about all of this is that this is in the wake of reducing the lead pile and collection after I took early retirement. I guess these circumstances--having to box and move everything--bring about another set of considerations other than the tidying and trimming model of the earlier exercise. We'll see.

  3. I echo both Keith and Steve’s sentiments. Real Life can throw a spanner into the works. How we deal with it shows character. Very happy to see that you did not wind up homeless in during these real state transactions. Our hobby is a patient one. Keep reading until your armies can once again see action.

    1. We do have the luxury of not having to sell the current residence in order to move. So our plan always was to do this in a more incremental way: first get and close on the new place and then shift the old one, as opposed to having the two processes overlap. We got a bit away from that, but we have a better road map now for the next time around.

  4. Stressful times mate. Keep your pecker up. I’ve not long been through a similar situation and disposed of way too much of my hobby stuff in the process. Let temperance be your watchword!

    1. Sound council. I think making decisions in the abstract as opposed to in the context of an actual space would lead to regrets. Who knows? We may find a place with a splendid "man cave" that will swallow all of this whole!

  5. Having been in a similar position, I found that having a couple of short play boardgames on hand was enough to scratch an itch and at least get something to the table. Hope the repair gets done quickly to allow ‘another’ unpacking!

    1. Good point, Norm. I started out (like many) as a board wargamer, and have been thinking more and more about the virtues of those and perhaps returning to them as an added, easier dimension.

  6. As the others have said…it good that you found out the problems before the purchase went through…
I have no intention of moving house again which is why I am having my cellar tanked out so I can have some decent dry storage.

    All the best. Aly

    1. During my military career (a previous life), having to move every few years was a fact of life, and you set up house accordingly. One of the joys of moving into this house was that the prospect of having to pack up and go in three years was no longer hanging over our heads, so we followed a more normal pattern; given that we've been here over a decade, I reckon it's been a good run.

  7. Oh man, I rather plan a funeral than try to move house.
That was kinda morbid. Let's try: I rather plan a wedding..
Point is, I rather do almost anything than move. It's all consuming. So no worries then about silly blog stuff. Though you are messing out on probably the best posts that I have ever written. 😀
Glad you are just busy and eaten by wolves, because you spent far too much time outside.

    1. I recall thinking "what if I have to move this thing" when assembling the big glass display case in my room, but then dismissing that as a concern from a previous, more nomadic life. We'll just have to hire some pros to get us shifted, but still a disruptive time. At least it keeps me out of wolf and bear territory, so there's that 😀

  8. Couple of years ago I had to move everything out of the house to do a major repairs (all electric wiring being replaced). I wouldn't like to go through this again!

    Best wishes,
    Jan

    1. Agree. Displacing for major repairs is the worst since there isn't anywhere else to go!

  9. I've been where we are for a few years now and I have to admit to kicking downsizing down the road primarily because of my hobby footprint! Glad you dodged a bullet with the other place and I hope you get some hobby time in!
    Best Iain

    1. Thanks, Iain: at this point, I'm in a wait and see mode. Everything is boxed and stored (well, nearly). Beyond any streamlining by choice that gets done, how much more gets chopped will depend on the the size and configuration of the new space. So far, so good.
